And so it begins…….

One would think that signing your name on 75 pieces of paper, in a well-appointed office in a title company of your realtor’s choosing, for the sum of nearly a quarter-million dollars would be the kick-in-the-junk move of the decade. Think again. This hour of your life, that you never get back, is only the precursor of things to come. Those things, of course, are at Home Depot.

Home Depot is the start point for everything ELSE you need for the house. The house, obviously, is not enough all by its lonesome. It NEEDS new appliances, cabinetry, plumbing, tools, lawn equipment, patio furniture, did I mention appliances, and more. Buying a house is like having a teenager. If only you had to pay for the birth. But you have to pay for clothes, food, braces, homecoming dress, blah blah blah. I had no idea that I needed to buy a drill (not just a screwdriver. THAT would simply not be sufficient. Can you imagine putting up a closet rack with ONLY a screw driver. Duh!). I needed to buy [__fill in the blank__](really, I didn’t own one, so I’m not waiting on these with my furniture, which, as it turns out, is on a ship in the Pacific. Hopefully, I get my goods by mid-October).

Okay, I truly needed a few things, like a lawnmower and weed-eater. I needed a washer and dryer. The house NEEDED a new fridge and dishwasher. And I needed to keep it simple for all of us. So, we bought them all. IN ONE DAY! We are now on a first name basis with half of the staff of our local Home Depot. Pretty soon we are going to have to go to a 12-Step meeting every Friday evening at the Elk Lodge for Home Depot Shoppers Anonymous. This is where I grab my cup of bad coffee and introduce myself: “Hi, I’m Andrew F. and I haven’t been to the Home Depot for two weeks.” All the time thinking that I could get them a Black and Decker Space Saver coffee maker for $29 and some better folding chairs for $17. Only thing is, if I am going to HD with my wife, am I really required to complete step eight?

Anyway, I finally got the refrigerator I’ve wanted forever. Side-by-side, stainless steel front, ice maker/water dispenser on the front, slide out shelves in the fridge, the works. I got the top of the line LG washer/dryer. All digital, front-loaders and they are sweet! I can’t wait for the kids to do their OWN laundry.

So, there it is. We are in the house, awaiting furniture, but living with the nicest and newest creature features. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Home sweet home. Or is it home sweet Home Depot?!

Blast from the Past

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Took a weekend away from the kids and the pressures of buying and moving into a new house. Micki and I went to Rosemary Beach and visited with a friend from high school, Geri Golding.

Geri is the proprieter of a kids toy and clothing shop in the town's shopping district. (see my Zenfergism blog for more details). The beach was fantastic, the weather had cooled off and rain had come through. The water was a gorgeous turquoise and calm. It was refreshing to see all of the different flavors of the small towns on the way back to Pace. And the golf resort in Sandestin called my name. The outlet mall in Destin called to Micki and she bought several pairs of shoes at the Clarks store. A great day getaway from the norm. We have three years to take little trips just like this last one. Stay tuned.
